Is it [a condition] that the suitor propose to the bride three times, and the guardian accept three times, and that Surat al-Fatiha be recited after agreeing upon the conditions? What is the advice concerning extravagance in the mahr, gold, and wool? Is the husband obligated to [cover] Eid expenses if the marriage is delayed? Is it a condition for the bride's family to provide a ram for the henna night? Is the wedding night obligatory, or should it be kept private?

The basic principle regarding customs is permissibility unless they contradict Islamic law. The engagement is a promise of marriage, and specific wordings are not required for it; any phrasing that conveys the intended meaning is sufficient. Repeating a specific wording is an innovation (bid'ah) if it is done with the belief that it is sunnah (definition), and reciting Al-Fatiha at the engagement has no basis. Whatever is agreed upon for the dowry is permissible, whether it is cash, appliances, or clothing, as long as it is not unknown or involves excessive uncertainty (gharar (definition) fahish). There is no harm in the husband giving gifts to his wife on holidays, or the wife's family giving gifts to the husband on the henna night. Announcing the wedding is recommended, but its absence does not affect the validity of the marriage.
