What is meant by "let him speak good or remain silent"; is it not speaking except out of necessity and not jesting, or is it not speaking excessively?
The mentioned in the two Sahihs and elsewhere commands saying good, which is the opposite of evil. Good is a comprehensive word for everything that benefits a Muslim, materially or spiritually, in this world and the hereafter. It includes acts of obedience and permissible things, and excludes prohibitions. It is not intended to prohibit joking if it is truthful, nor to prohibit permissible speech if it does not lead to something forbidden. Rather, it may even be desirable if it fosters affection, strengthens brotherhood, and removes estrangement, according to the Hadith: "The believer is affectionate and is loved, and there is no good in one who is not affectionate and is not loved."
