What is the authenticity of the narration reported from Ibn Mas'ud: "Singing cultivates hypocrisy in the heart, just as water cultivates crops," and does it have the ruling of a Marfu' (a Hadith directly attributed to the Prophet)?

The Hadith "Singing cultivates hypocrisy in the heart" is weak when مرفوع (attributed to the Prophet) due to the anonymity of a shaykh who narrated from Abu Wa'il, but it is authentic when موقوف (attributed to a Companion, in this case, Ibn Mas'ud). Scholars differed regarding the ruling on the مرفوع version: some opined that it carries the حكم المرفوع (ruling of being attributed to the Prophet) because such a statement is not made based on personal opinion, while others held that it should not be given the ruling of being مرفوع because its meaning can be understood through contemplation and reflection on the conditions of those afflicted by singing.
