What is the ruling regarding a man who said to his wife, "If you do not quicken your pace in walking, then you are divorced," intending for her to hurry and not intending divorce? Does the divorce take effect if she does not quicken her pace?

If a husband tells his wife, "If you do not walk quickly, then you are divorced," and the condition is met (she does not walk quickly), the majority of scholars hold that a divorce occurs. However, the preponderant opinion is to elaborate: if the husband did not intend divorce but rather intended to urge her to speed up, then this is considered an oath, and he must pay an expiation for an oath (feeding ten poor persons, or clothing them, or fasting three days if he cannot find any means). The husband should fear Allah and not use divorce in such matters.
