What is the ruling on studying Arabic literature?

Arabic literature is a branch of the Arabic language, and studying it is a communal obligation (fard kifaya) because it is the primary means of understanding the texts of revelation. Studying Arabic literature with the intention of learning Islam and gaining deeper understanding in the religion is among the best acts of closeness [to Allah]; in fact, it is better than becoming engrossed in supererogatory fasting and prayers, as some scholars have said: "Learning the language, from a religious perspective, is preferred over dedicating oneself to the worship of the Glorious [Lord]."
