What should a man who is married to two women do, when his heart is attached to the first, whom his family does not like, and he has a child with the second, for whom he has no feelings, and he finds it difficult to give her her marital rights and deal with her, knowing that she is religious and well-liked by his family?

A husband must treat his wife kindly, in word and deed, by giving her her rights concerning sustenance, clothing, and housing. He should accompany her beautifully, by refraining from harm and by good treatment and character. If he cannot give her rights of good companionship, then he must release her kindly. A husband may dislike his wife, but Allah will place abundant good in his patience, in this world and the Hereafter. It is not necessary for him to love her in order to give her her rights; rather, her rights are obligatory upon him. Not all homes are built on love, but rather on care and responsibility.
