What are a husband's duties toward his wife, and is he obligated to make her happy? And what is the reason that could convince a husband to care for and make his wife happy just as he cares for his own family?
The husband must treat his wife kindly and provide for her, as Allah Almighty says: (And live with them in kindness) and (And due to them is similar to what is due from them, in a reasonable manner). The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was asked about the wife's right, and he said: "That you feed her when you eat, and clothe her when you clothe yourself." He also enjoined good treatment of women. Therefore, he must fear Allah concerning her and give everyone their due. Kindness to the wife does not contradict honoring parents and maintaining kinship ties. The best thing to remember is the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "The best of you is the best to his family, and I am the best of you to my family." One should seek the reasons for shortcomings and be patient, for there is good in it, as Allah Almighty says: (And be patient, indeed Allah is with the patient).
