What is the ruling on reading novels for entertainment in one's free time, and what is the ruling on reading horror novels?

A Muslim should not have free time; rather, they should utilize it in what benefits them and brings them closer to Allah, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two blessings in which many people are deceived: health and free time." So, whoever utilizes their free time and health in obedience to Allah is indeed fortunate, and whoever uses them in disobeying Allah is indeed unfortunate.

Therefore, one should occupy their time with acts of worship such as remembering Allah (Dhikr), reciting the Qur'an, studying beneficial books, and attending gatherings of knowledge.

As for novels free from শরিয়াহ violations and with good intentions, there is no harm in reading them. However, it is better to avoid horror novels, even if they are free from শরিয়াহ violations, due to their potential lack of benefit and their negative impact on the reader's psyche.
