Why was the Qur'an named "Qur'an"?

The Qur’an was given this name because it gathers the surahs and verses. The root of the word indicates gathering and combining, as in Az-Zubaidi’s saying: “He ‘qara’a’ (read) something: he gathered it, and combined it, meaning he joined parts of it together.” And from it is the Almighty’s saying: {Indeed, upon Us is its collection and its recitation} (Al-Qiyamah: 17), meaning its collection.
