Is it obligatory to treat with reverence audiotapes on which the Holy Qur’an is recorded, and how should they be disposed of?

Cassette tapes containing the Quran are not like a mus'haf (copy of the Quran), and a person in a state of major ritual impurity ( junub) is permitted to touch them. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen held the view that these tapes do not display verses or hadiths; rather, they are颗粒 that produce sound. Therefore, they are not subject to the rulings governing paper on which the Quran is written. It is permissible to dispose of them in a waste bin, provided there is no intention of disrespecting them, or to enter the toilet with them. However, out of precaution, it is better to dispose of them in a more appropriate manner, such as giving them to someone who can benefit from them, burying them, or placing them in a respectful location. If the Basmala ( "Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Rahim" ) or other Islamically respected phrases are written on the tape, then it is not permissible to discard them in unclean places.
