Can I give charity on behalf of the newborn instead of shaving its head?

It is recommended to shave the newborn's head hair on the seventh day and to give in charity its weight in gold or silver. This is a recommendation, not an obligation. And whoever gives in charity without shaving the head misses the reward of shaving but incurs no sin.
