What is the ruling on a father shunning his children (daughter and son) for more than two months, possibly extending to a year, due to a mistake they committed, especially with their repeated errors and frequent repentance, and the father viewing this as a punishment by not speaking to them?

It is impermissible to abandon (hajr) a Muslim for more than three nights, except for a predominant legitimate (shar'i) interest, such as if the abandoned person is a sinner or an innovator. It is permissible for a father to discipline his son by abandoning him for more than three nights if there is a predominant interest. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) abandoned Ibn Az-Zubair when she considered his statement to be an act of disobedience and an affront to her status. Ibn Hajar mentioned that a father's abandonment of his son is not restricted to three nights. Children ought to be dutiful to their father, and the father should pardon and forgive, and discipline them in a manner commensurate with their mistakes, without abandoning them for a reason other than a predominant interest.
