What is the ruling if a man embraces Islam while his wife remains a Hindu in her country, and he is returning to her?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

A Muslim man is not permitted to have sexual relations with his non-Muslim wife. However, if she embraces Islam during her 'iddah (waiting period) from him, she returns to him with the original marriage contract. If she embraces Islam after her 'iddah has expired, she does not return to him except with a new marriage contract. As for children who have not reached puberty, their Islam is determined by the religion of the better of their two parents. It is incumbent to gradually teach the wife matters of religion, treat her with kindness, and display the virtues of Islam.
