Is it permissible to supplicate for worldly matters, specifying them by name, in the obligatory prayer?

It is permissible to supplicate for worldly matters during prayer, and this is the view of the Malikis, Shafi'is, and some Hanbalis. They cite as evidence the hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said at the end of the tashahhud: "Then let him choose whatever supplication he wishes." They also cite other hadiths that indicate the generality of supplication during prayer, such as the Prophet's supplication against tribes or for the salvation of individuals by their names. Imam An-Nawawi holds that their madhhab permits supplication for anything that is permissible to supplicate for outside of prayer, whether related to religious or worldly matters, emphasizing that this does not invalidate the prayer. Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen supported this view, arguing that supplication is an act of worship and that a person does not find himself fully devoted to Allah except when he is praying, so there is no impediment to asking Allah for what he needs in his worldly life. Accordingly, supplicating for facilitated companionship with righteous people or righteous friends, even by specifying names, is permissible.
