Are the pre-prayer supererogatory Sunnah prayers to be performed before the adhan or between the adhan and the iqamah? Can they be made up if the congregational prayer is missed? The pre-prayer regular supererogatory (ratibah) is performed after the prayer time begins and before performing the obligatory prayer itself. It is not linked to the call to prayer (adhan). Whoever misses a regular supererogatory prayer should make it up after the obligatory prayer to which it is associated. The obligatory prayer (fard) is made up by scholarly consensus for whoever forgot it or intentionally missed it, according to the majority of scholars. The regular supererogatory prayer (ratibah) is made up, as it is recommended according to the most preponderant opinion, and congregational prayer is not sunnah for it. Whoever misses the regular supererogatory prayer at its prescribed time may make it up at any other time. The night vigil (Qiyam al-Layl/Tahajjud) begins immediately after the 'Isha prayer and extends until the appearance of dawn.
