The answer

If a man marries a second wife, he is not blameworthy Islamically. The first wife should remain with him if she is able; otherwise, she has the right to seek divorce. If he does not respond, she may seek khul' (divorce by mutual agreement) in exchange for compensation, according to the Almighty's saying: "And if you fear that they will not observe the limits of Allah, then there is no blame upon either of them concerning that by which she ransoms herself." In this case, the woman receives no maintenance, no compensatory gift, and no housing, while the children's maintenance remains the responsibility of the husband.
