What is the ruling on a wife remaining with her husband who lies, is in debt, does not provide for her, lives with his family, is negligent in his prayers, does not care for his personal hygiene, and with whom she does not feel pleasure?

Marriage is a source of tranquility, affection, and mercy, and achieving these objectives is its foundation. If these objectives are not met, then divorce becomes a legitimate recourse. The reasons mentioned in the question permit seeking divorce, based on the Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) saying: "Any woman who asks her husband for divorce without a valid reason will be deprived of the scent of Paradise." Here, "valid reason" (ba's) refers to the existence of a legitimate cause necessitating divorce, such as the husband's stinginess, his sins, or his abusive behavior. Nevertheless, one should deliberate carefully before proceeding with a divorce, taking into consideration:

1. The hope for the husband's improvement and the wife's patience with him, as his condition might improve with patience and kindness.

2. Considering the wife's situation after divorce, and whether her life will be better or worse.

3. Frequently resorting to Allah through supplication (du'a) and seeking His guidance (istikharah) before making a decision.
