The majority of scholars hold that a wife seeking her husband's permission for spending her own money is commendable, not obligatory. This is the preponderant view, based on the general import of the Almighty's saying: "Until, when they reach the age of marriage, if you perceive in them sound judgment, then release to them their property." Imam Malik, however, held that she may donate up to one-third of her wealth, but for anything exceeding that, her husband's permission is required. It is advisable for the wife to retain some of her money and to seek her husband's permission for spending more than one-third, in order to preserve conjugal harmony.
