Is a wife entitled to dispose of her private salary by giving money to her family, while insisting that her husband pay all household expenses and rent, and is the husband entitled to ask her about her salary?

The wife's money is her own, and she has the right to dispose of it as she wishes, unless she gives it willingly, in accordance with the Almighty's saying: "But if they, of their own accord, remit to you anything of it, take it as pleasant and wholesome." (Quran 4:4). The wives of the Companions would give charity from their jewelry without their husbands' permission, just as Maymunah and Asma' emancipated two of their slave-girls without seeking permission. As for the hadith: "It is not permissible for a woman to have authority over her money if her husband owns her chastity," it is weak, and even if it were authentic, it would be interpreted as a matter of good companionship, not obligation. If the husband permits his wife to work on the condition that she spends from her salary on some living expenses, then this condition is valid and must be fulfilled. She is also permitted to give her mother from her own private money. Both spouses are advised to avoid disputes over minor financial matters to preserve affection and mercy.
