Jalal al-Din al-Mahalli is Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ansari al-Mahalli al-Qahiri al-Shafi'i. He was born in Cairo in the year 791 AH and grew up there. He engaged in various sciences such as Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and its principles, Arabic language, Tafsir (Quranic exegesis), and Hadith (Prophetic tradition). He studied under prominent shaykhs like Siraj al-Din al-Balqini and al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani. He was someone who always returned to the truth, abstained from official positions, and refused the position of judge when it was offered to him. Al-Suyuti described him as "the paragon of this era in following the path of the Salaf (pious predecessors) with piety and devoutness." Among his works are Tafsir al-Jalalayn (completed by al-Suyuti), Sharh Jam' al-Jawami' (Al-Badr al-Tali'), and Sharh Waraqat Imam al-Haramayn. He passed away in the year 864 AH.
