What is the ruling on consuming donkey milk for treating severe coughing?

Scholars have differed on the ruling concerning drinking donkey milk for medicinal purposes. Some have prohibited it, while others have permitted it. Those who prohibited it cited the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who forbade their meat and milk. Those who permitted it include Malik and the Shafi'is, taking into consideration the difference of opinion regarding the permissibility of eating them, and based on the principle that it is permissible to treat with impure substances out of necessity.
