What is the ruling on drinking the milk of a female donkey?

Drinking mare's milk without necessity is forbidden according to the four madhhabs and others, and it is considered najis (impure) by the majority. There are two narrations concerning it among the Hanafis and Shafi'is, and the correct view is that it is a grave impurity (najasa ghaliza). The Malikis hold that mare's milk follows the ruling of its meat, which is forbidden to eat, and thus it is impure. As for the Hanbalis, they believe that the milk of an animal whose meat is not permissible to eat is impure.
