Is eating the meat of a donkey or a horse forbidden (haram)?
The meat of domestic donkeys is not permissible to eat, whereas horse meat is permissible. This is the view of the majority of scholars, who cite as evidence the hadith of Asma: "During the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, we slaughtered a horse and ate it." They also cite the Prophet's prohibition, on the day of Khaybar, of the meat of domestic donkeys, and his permission regarding horses. What was reported from Ibn Abbas regarding the permissibility of donkey meat, or from Imam Malik regarding the impermissibility of horse meat, is weak and cannot stand against what is in the Two Sahihs. The verse from Surah An-Nahl: "And (He created) horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride and as an adornment" does not indicate the prohibition of horse meat.
