Why is the meat of donkeys or horses forbidden?
The majority of scholars permit the consumption of horse meat, based on what was narrated by Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) "prohibited on the day of Khaybar the meat of domestic donkeys, but permitted the meat of horses." As for donkey meat, it is forbidden according to the majority due to the aforementioned hadith. The reason for prohibiting horse meat, according to those who hold this view, is that horses are used for riding, travel, carrying burdens, and for adornment, as stated in the noble verse: "And [He created] horses, mules, and donkeys for you to ride upon and as adornment." It is permissible for a Muslim to know the reason behind a legal ruling, but above all, one must submit to and obey the command of Allah and His Messenger.
