Is it permissible to eat the meat of a donkey?

It is permissible to eat wild donkeys. The proof of its permissibility is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ate from it and said to his companions: "It is lawful, so eat from it." As for domestic donkeys, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade them on the Day of Khaybar, for "the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the meat of donkeys on the Day of Khaybar," and "the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the meat of domestic donkeys." Ibn Qudamah narrated that most scholars consider it forbidden.
