Is it permissible for a poor man to appoint someone to collect Zakat for him from the wealthy, in exchange for giving him ten out of every hundred, and that without the permission of the one giving the charity?
It is not permissible for a poor person to agree with someone who collects for him or solicits donations on his behalf, to give him a percentage or a portion of what is collected. This is because the intermediary would primarily be asking people for their money for his own benefit. This is considered asking people for the purpose of accumulation, which the Prophet (peace be upon him) warned against, saying: "Whoever asks people for their money to accumulate wealth, he is only asking for live coals; let him take little or much." Furthermore, the intermediary will persist in asking, and this might harm other needy individuals. In addition, his effort might be a form of intercession for which it is not permissible to take compensation, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever intercedes for his brother with an intercession, and he is then given a gift for it, he has approached a great door from the doors of usury."
