Is it permissible for a person in a state of ritual impurity (junub) to wipe over his khuffs (leather socks) during ablution (wudu') if he intends to sleep, by analogy to the concession granted by the Prophet (peace be blessings be upon him) to Umar when he asked him: "Does one of us sleep while he is in a state of ritual impurity (junub)?", and he replied: "Yes, if he performs ablution (wudu')"?

It is sunnah (definition) for one who is in a state of janabah (definition) (major ritual impurity) to perform ablution before sleeping. If he intends to perform ablution for sleep and is wearing khuffayn (leather socks), some scholars prohibit him from wiping over them, based on the hadith (definition) of Safwan ibn Assal regarding the condition of removing the khuffayn for janabah, and because the concession of wiping is restricted by the absence of janabah. However, others held the view that it is permissible for one in a state of janabah to wipe over them for the ablution performed before sleep, because it is not an ablution for prayer but rather a recommended ablution for cleanliness and invigoration. Sheikh Abd al-Rahman al-Barrak permitted wiping over the khuffayn for one in a state of janabah in this scenario.
