What is the correct interpretation of the verse: "And whoever among you turns to them [for alliance] is indeed one of them," and does it apply to our current time?

The correct verse is: "O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. Some of them are allies of one another. And whoever of you takes them as allies, indeed, he is one of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people." Its meaning is that believers should not take the Jews and the Christians as allies in friendship and social interaction, because they are united against the Muslims. Whoever takes them as allies is considered to be one of them, because this indicates complete agreement. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoers who have wronged themselves by allying with the disbelievers. The ruling of the verse remains valid concerning not taking them as allies in support and close association, but dealing with them is not included in the prohibition. Allying with disbelievers can be a sin or can reach the level of disbelief, and declaring someone a disbeliever has its own regulations.
