Is it permissible to wear black for the deceased?

Designating black shrouds for the deceased is contrary to the Sunnah, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Wear white clothes, for they are among your best garments, and shroud your dead in them."

As for a woman observing iddah (waiting period) wearing black, anything considered an adornment, whether Islamically or customarily, is forbidden for her. This includes clothes customarily considered adornments, regardless of color. A black garment may be prohibited if it enhances a woman's beauty or is considered an adornment. The prohibition of wearing dyed garments was mentioned, as in the Hadith of Umm Atiyyah: "We were forbidden to mourn for a deceased person for more than three days, except for a husband for four months and ten days. We were also forbidden to apply kohl, to use perfume, and to wear a dyed garment."

In summary, a woman observing iddah is forbidden from wearing any dyed garment or any garment considered an adornment in her country's custom. Other garments are permissible for her, even if they are black. The widespread practice of dedicating black clothing for mourning has no basis.
