What is the explanation of the hadith: "I am the closest of people to the believers in the Book of Allah, the Exalted, and the Glorious. So, whoever among you leaves behind a debt or a destitute family, then call upon me, for I am his guardian. And whoever among you leaves behind wealth, then let his wealth be inherited by his next of kin, whoever they may be"? Where the hadith mentions, "You should call upon me (seeking help) because I am your guardian"?

The hadith "I am the closest of people to the believers" indicates that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, took charge of the affairs of the believers during his lifetime, such as settling the debts of those who died without fulfilling them. It has no relation to the supplication of asking or intercession after his death. Other narrations have shown that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, would settle the debts of the deceased if they did not leave enough to repay them. After the death of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, the ruler or sultan takes his place in settling the debts of deceased Muslims from the public treasury or the share designated for debtors, as scholars have inferred. What confirms this is his, peace and blessings be upon him, guidance to the woman to go to Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, after his death, not to supplicate to him.
