The question

Is seeing a very slight turbidity, or a sticky yellowish discharge tending towards white after repeatedly inserting a cotton swab to confirm purity from menstruation, considered purity? And is yellowish or reddish discharge after ghusl considered menstruation? And is the duration of menstruation (e.g., 6 days) bound precisely to the minute and hour? And is it permissible to act upon the opinion that considers yellowish and turbid discharge as menstruation as long as it is connected to the menstruation?

The answer

Yellowish and brownish discharges are considered menstruation if they are connected to blood, even if it is after the usual period. One should disregard obsessive doubts. When a cotton swab is inserted and comes out white, free of blood, yellowish, or brownish discharge, the woman has achieved purity. Reddish discharge is considered menstruation. If a woman sees purity before the end of her usual period, she must perform ghusl (ritual bath). If blood, yellowish, or brownish discharge reappears within her usual period, she reverts to being in menstruation. Intermittent purity during menstruation is valid purity. Blood seen after the usual period is considered menstruation if it occurs within the possible timeframe. If a woman doubts the attainment of purity, the default is that menstruation persists. If purity has been attained and she doubts seeing yellowish or brownish discharge, the default is that purity persists.
