Which came first: the prohibition of images or the permissibility of children playing with them?

Scholars have differed regarding the issue of playing with dolls (girl figures).

The majority view permits it for the purpose of training girls in household matters.

Others have held that the permission for this has been abrogated and that the prohibition of images includes them.

The Fiqh Encyclopedia suggests that the permission for children's toys came after the prohibition of image-making, citing the hadith of Aisha which mentions that this occurred upon the return of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, from the Battle of Tabuk.
