How can one respond to a brother who sees no sin in excessive eating, refuses to go to the mosque relying on the fact that congregational prayer is a confirmed Sunnah, and delays prayer beyond the time of the Adhan, arguing that the prayer time extends beyond the Adhan?
Excessive eating is religiously prohibited and is considered unlawful if it harms the Muslim, in accordance with the Almighty’s saying: (And eat and drink, but be not excessive. Indeed, He likes not those who commit excess). This is further supported by the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) : (No human ever filled a vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels are sufficient for a human to keep his back straight. But if he must eat more, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath). Furthermore, excessive satiety in this world leads to hunger on the Day of Resurrection. Reducing food intake should be gradual. Moreover, a Muslim must maintain congregational prayers as they are among the practices of guidance, and the Companions never failed to attend them except for a valid excuse.
