What are the types of revelation (Wahy)?

The revelation that came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was of several types: visions, the angel casting (the revelation) into his heart without him seeing the angel, the angel appearing to him in the form of a man, the revelation coming to him with a sound like the ringing of a bell, which was the most severe upon him, and what Allah revealed to him above the heavens on the night of Al-Mi'raj (the ascension).

The first revelation that descended upon him was the command to read inwardly: "Read in the name of your Lord who created," then he was commanded to convey the message with the words: "O you who covers himself [with a garment], Arise and warn." Then the command to warn progressed from his closest relatives to all mankind. In the beginning, he was commanded to refrain (from fighting) and to be patient. Then he was permitted to migrate and to fight, and the matter evolved to fighting the polytheists until the religion is entirely for Allah.
