What is the ruling on gradual involvement in the unlawful, such as someone who obtained a job through bribery and then helped another person with permissible information by which they secured a job – is this job forbidden? Or like someone who used an internet device obtained through suspicious means to inquire about studies – would their studies be unlawful? And what is the ruling on the job?
If a person has been entrusted with a job and performs it in the most complete manner, there is no harm for him in remaining in it and benefiting from what is given in return for his performance, even if he had taken a forbidden path to obtain it. He must, therefore, seek Allah's forgiveness and resolve not to return to such a path. This does not prevent him from remaining in his work if he performs it well and as required. The door of whisperings (waswas) and doubts, if opened, never closes and corrupts religion and life. The one afflicted by whisperings should turn away from them and not succumb to them.
