Is it obligatory for the Imam to recite the Basmalah silently in the Fatiha and the surah that follows it, and does the prostration of forgetfulness compensate for forgetting it?

Readers have agreed on the obligation of reciting the Basmalah at the beginning of Al-Fatiha and at the beginning of all surahs except Surat At-Tawbah. Scribes of the Qur'anic manuscripts differed on counting the Basmalah as an ayah of Al-Fatiha. The Meccan and Kufan manuscripts counted it as an ayah, while the Medinan, Shamian, and Basran manuscripts did not. As for the jurists, they differed on whether the Basmalah is an ayah of Al-Fatiha. Ash-Shafi'i, Ibn Al-Mubarak, and Ahmad (in one narration) held that it is an independent ayah and prayer is not valid without it, citing the hadith reported by Ad-Daraqutni and Al-Bayhaqi. In contrast, Abu Hanifa, Malik, and Ahmad (in another narration) held that it is not an independent ayah in Al-Fatiha. They argued using the hadith of Abu Hurairah, in which the Basmalah was not mentioned during the division of the prayer, and the hadith of Anas, which indicates that the Prophet (peace be upon him) did not recite the Basmalah aloud in prayer.

Based on this disagreement, whoever follows the opinion that does not consider the Basmalah an ayah of Al-Fatiha is not required to perform sujud as-sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) for omitting it. However, whoever follows the opinion that considers it an ayah must repeat the prayer if they only remembered its omission after the time for rectification had passed.
