What is the ruling on holding nights of Qur’an recitation and preaching during the Prophet’s birthday (Mawlid), or upon the death of a relative, or on a charitable night to encourage people to repent?

Gathering to celebrate the Mawlid (Prophet's birthday) is an innovation (bid'ah) that was not known during the time of the Companions or the Salaf. And gathering for the death of a relative is considered part of forbidden wailing (niyaha), based on the saying of Jarir ibn Abdullah al-Bajali: "We used to consider gathering with the family of the deceased and preparing food after the burial as part of wailing."
