Must the young man verbally divorce the girl, and is expiation incumbent upon her, after she said to him "I marry myself to you" more than once, and he paid her a Dinar, without consummation, and his denial of the promise of marriage, based on the hadith: "There are three matters whose seriousness is seriousness and whose jest is seriousness: marriage, divorce, and return [to conjugal relations after a revocable divorce]"?

A marriage is not valid merely by a woman saying to a man, "I marry myself to you." For a lawful marriage has pillars and conditions without which it is invalid, such as the guardian (wali) and witnesses. Therefore, you must repent to Allah Almighty by abandoning the sin, regretting it, and resolving not to return to it. You must also avoid the causes of sin and not be lenient in dealing with non- men.
