What is the correct name for Umm Sulaym, and is it permissible to name a girl Al-Rumaysa' or Al-Ghumaysa'? And what do these names mean?
Umm Sulaym is Ar-Rumaysa' bint Milhan, and she is also called Al-Ghumaysa' Al-Ansariya Al-Khazrajiya. She is the mother of Anas ibn Malik, the servant of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. She was a woman of great stances, among which was her refusal to marry Abu Talha before he embraced Islam, making his conversion to Islam her dowry. Ar-Rumaysa' or Al-Ghumaysa' are diminutives of Ar-Ramsa' or Al-Ghamṣa', both derived from "ramṣ" and "ghamaṣ," which refer to the matter that collects in the corner of the eye. There is no doubt about the beauty of being named with this name due to the greatness of this female Companion.
