Must one fast and make up the previous day if a few drops of blood appeared and then stopped, given that this period is the expected time for menstruation?

Scholars have differed regarding whether drops of blood followed by a cessation of bleeding are considered menstruation (hayd) or not. The majority, including the Shafi'is, hold that they are not considered menstruation and do not prevent one from praying or fasting, nor is it necessary to make up the days during which they occurred; this is because they are less than the minimum duration of menstruation according to them. The majority has explicitly stated that if blood is less than the minimum duration of menstruation, it is irregular bleeding (istihadah), not menstruation.
