Is the marriage of an adulterer to the woman with whom he committed adultery, after repentance and purification, Islamically invalid, knowing that there are other jurisprudential opinions that permit it?

The preponderant view regarding the marriage of an adulterer to the woman with whom he committed adultery, after repentance and completion of her waiting period (iddah), is permissibility. This is because verse 3 of Surat An-Nur (24:3) - "The adulterer does not marry except an adulteress or a polytheist, and as for the adulteress, none marries her except an adulterer or a polytheist. And that has been made unlawful for the believers" - does not differentiate between an adulterer marrying the woman with whom he committed adultery and marrying someone else. Differences of opinion have been reported among the Salaf concerning this issue, with some permitting it and others prohibiting it. The narrations from Aisha and Ibn Masud, who held the view of prohibition, have been authenticated. However, the disagreement among jurists does not invalidate the marriage contract, for the opinion of a layman is that of his mufti, and there is no need to doubt the validity of the marriage due to this difference of opinion.
