What is the ruling on delaying the performance of the Fajr prayer until close to sunrise?

The five daily prayers have specific times, and they must be performed within them. Delaying a prayer beyond its prescribed time without a valid excuse is a major sin. The time for the Fajr prayer extends from the appearance of true dawn until sunrise. The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to pray Fajr bi ghalas (at the very beginning of its time). Performing the Fajr prayer early in its time (taghlees) is preferable.
