What is the ruling on Muslim students residing in America for voluntary study?
One who possesses knowledge and insight into the religion of Allah, is capable of calling people to it and teaching them good, refutes misconceptions, and manifests his religion among disbelievers, incurs no sin by residing among them. Rather, Allah may guide a great multitude through him if he is sincere and patient. However, for one who lacks knowledge or patience, or fears falling into sin, or is unable to manifest his religion and call to Tawhid (monotheism), it is not permissible for him to reside among the polytheists, due to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "I am free of any Muslim who resides among the polytheists," and due to the danger inherent in that.
