Why doesn't a Muslim limit supererogatory acts to what has been authentically reported from the Prophet, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, in his sayings and actions, given his statement: "Indeed, I am the most fearful of Allah among you and the most pious; and whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me"? Is it better to restrict oneself to what is mentioned in his Sunnah, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon him, without adding anything unless he did it?

Increasing supererogatory prayers beyond the established number of units (rak'ahs) for fixed sunnahs and optional prayers is not an innovation (bid'ah). The actions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, are not considered evidence against the desirability of what exceeds them. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged an abundance of supererogatory acts without setting a limit, saying: "Help me achieve that for yourself by performing many prostrations." And Allah the Almighty said in a Hadith Qudsi: "My servant continues to draw nearer to Me with supererogatory acts until I love him."
