How can one respond to those who claim that the Hadith of the Scroll, in which the Prophet says: "When the Day of Resurrection comes, a man will be brought forth, and ninety-nine scrolls will be spread out for him...", invalidates the aspect of deeds and contradicts other Quranic verses and Prophetic Ahadith?

The 'Hadith of the Card' (Hadith al-Bitaqa) is authentic, narrated by a large number of scholars, and has been deemed good (hasan) and authentic (sahih) by a group of them. If a hadith is authentic and its apparent meaning contradicts other texts, then the texts should not be rejected; rather, they should be reconciled and their meanings harmonized. Some scholars have interpreted the Hadith of the Card as referring to a high state of faith and certainty, whereby the reward of the Two Testimonies (Shahadatayn) outweighs the records (of deeds), and that the word (of testimony) emanated from a pure heart, thus saving the person. Others have interpreted it as referring to someone whose last words in this world were the testimony of faith.
