What is the ruling on one who claims that the injunctions of the Qur’an are for prophets and the general populace, while esoteric, divinely-inspired knowledge is exclusive to saints?

Al-Shanqiti, quoting Al-Qurtubi, said: A faction of the Batini (esoteric) heretics went so far as to abrogate religious rulings for the awliya' (saints) and those of special status, claiming that what occurs in their hearts suffices them from the religious texts. Al-Qurtubi refuted this statement, declaring it heresy and disbelief, for which its proponent is to be executed and not asked to repent, because the rulings of Allah Almighty are known only through the messengers, and there is no other way to know them. He added that whoever claims to derive knowledge from his heart and dispenses with the Book and the Sunnah has thereby ascribed to himself the specific characteristic of prophethood, which contradicts the finality of prophethood with our master Muhammad, peace be upon him.
