Will the questioner be sinful for his previous work in a café that brought lovers together, despite his need? Is his academic degree unlawful? Will he be held accountable for feeding his family from his previous earnings? Is he sinful for his current work, which requires him to speak with both sexes? Is there expiation for that?

Hotels and tourism involve violations of Islamic law, such as the drinking of alcohol and the exposure of awrah (private parts). Working in them or studying their management is a means of falling into forbidden acts. As for working in coffee shops, it is not permissible due to their inclusion of objectionable things like shisha (hookah) and intoxicants, and because they are places where men and women mix in a lewd manner, and the worker therein remains silent regarding the disapproval of evil. You must repent from this work and dispose of the money earned from it by spending it on the welfare of Muslims, in a proportion equivalent to the proportion of the forbidden work. As for what you have previously spent on necessities, there is no harm in it, Allah willing, and there is no expiation upon you except to dispose of the remaining money.
