Is intercourse considered to have occurred during menstruation if the bleeding stopped for one day then resumed the next day, and does that entail sin or bodily harm?

If "direct contact" means sexual intercourse after the cessation of menstruation and the wife's ritual bath (ghusl), then there is no sin. However, if it occurs after the cessation of menstruation but before the ritual bath, it is forbidden, and repentance (tawbah) and seeking forgiveness (istighfar) are obligatory.
