What should a person do if their father forbids them from reading and acquiring religious books, telling them: "Do not be overly strict in religion," and "Your specialization is computers, not religion," and "There are many in this specialization," and "It's like abundant trash"?

Your eagerness to learn about the religion is commendable. Your father's forbidding you from gaining deep understanding in the religion is not valid, for learning religious knowledge is among the best ways a person can spend their time. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "When Allah wishes good for someone, He gives him understanding in the religion."

Learning religious knowledge is of two types: 1. Fard Ayn (Individual Obligation): That which a Muslim cannot afford to be ignorant of, such as matters of faith and acts of worship. There is no obedience to the parent in preventing this, "for there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator." 2. Fard Kifayah (Communal Obligation): Expanding in religious learning. This is not individually obligatory. If it angers the parent, then it is preferable to obey him outwardly, out of respect and good companionship, and you can seek knowledge discreetly.

There is no contradiction between seeking religious knowledge and your academic specialization; rather, it enlightens your insight. Extremism and fanaticism are blameworthy in religion and are often a result of ignorance.

Regarding your father's statement: If he intended to mock the religion, then he must renew his faith, because "mocking the religion is disbelief, whether serious or in jest." If he intended to mock individuals, then he must repent, for mocking a Muslim is forbidden.

The advice is to learn the rulings of your religion and to be gentle with your father, explaining the truth to him with wisdom and kindness, while also focusing on your studies and having a sincere intention to serve the religion.
