What is the ruling on someone who catches the Tashahhud in the Friday prayer: should they pray two rak'ahs or like the Dhuhr prayer? And is it permissible to alert the Imam if he stands for an extra rak'ah due to forgetfulness after he has straightened up? And what is the ruling on someone who catches two rak'ahs with the Imam and then prays with him the rak'ah that the Imam made a mistake in: should he complete one rak'ah or make the tasleem with him?

One does not attain the Friday (prayer) except by catching one rak'ah of it. So, whoever catches the Imam in the last bowing (ruku') of the second rak'ah, and bows with him, he completes his prayer as a second rak'ah after the Imam's taslim and it is considered a Friday (prayer). As for whoever catches him after that, he has missed the Friday (prayer) and prays the Dhuhr prayer with four rak'ahs. This is based on the hadith: "Whoever catches one rak'ah of the prayer has caught the prayer." Abu Hanifah is of the view that whoever catches the tashahhud with the Imam has caught the Friday (prayer), and he prays two rak'ahs after the Imam's taslim.
